About

Venturing is an exciting program for older youth, both male and female, ages 14 (or 13 and have completed the eighth grade) through 21. Just like Cub Scouting or Boy Scouting, Venturing is a traditional program of the Boy Scouts of America. As a result, Venturers have opportunities that most people only dream about. Rappelling a cliff. Perfecting your shot. Designing a robot. Kayaking into the sunset. Exploring your faith. Volunteering at an animal shelter. The choice is yours!

The Venturing program usually operates at the local level in units called Venturing crews. Each crew has youth members, adult advisors, and a committee of adults which supports the youths’ activities. Venturing is youth-led and youth-inspired, so the youth are the ones who lead the crew, plan fun activities, and determine what the crew will do. The youth are supported by adult advisors, who mentor the youth and provide guidance as they learn and grow. Crews typically have between 8-20 youth members.

Crews are supported by a network of Venturing Officers’ Associations, or VOAs, at the council, area, region, and national levels. These organizations are groups of youth leaders and adult advisors who are dedicated to helping crews grow and delivering an outstanding Venturing program. Your local council may already have a VOA, but if not, you can start one!

As one of the four regions in the Boy Scouts of America, the Southern Region serves Venturers across the southern portion of the United States, from Texas to Virginia and Florida to Kentucky. The region is led by a VOA consisting of a youth president and three youth vice presidents, supported by a group of dedicated adult volunteer advisors and Scouting professionals. The region’s official event is called Winterfest, held every February in Gatlinburg, TN.

To effectively serve Venturers across numerous states, the Southern Region is itself divided into nine areas. Each area has its own VOA, holds area-wide events, and is dedicated to supporting the council VOAs within its territory. The area VOAs represent Venturers and council VOAs to the region VOA, who in turn represents them at the national level.
